Sacha Puttnam

Educated in conducting and composition at Boston’s Berklee College of Music and the Moscow Conservatory, Sacha Puttnam composes and arranges for film, television, radio and games as well as for several groups and ensembles.

With musical interests ranging from classical and baroque to rock and electronica. He conducted the Moscow State Orchestra under the guidance of Leonid Nikolaev and Gennadi Rojdestvenski; Touring the world with Moby and Bush as well as recording with Hybrid, Regina Spektor and Narada Michael Walden.

Raised in the world of film, where one of his earliest musical memories was watching Paul Williams playing the original score for Bugsy Malone on the same piano he received his first lessons. Later, he was with Vangelis as he created the theme music for the film Chariots of Fire, and Mark Knopfler as he was scoring Local Hero and Cal. Puttnam's weekends were spent in the dubbing theatres of Soho and Pinewood where he learned the techniques of shaping film and music through Howard Blake's The Duellists, Mike Oldfield's The Killing Fields, Georgio Moroder's Midnight Express and Ennio Morricone's The Mission.

“In that creative environment,” he says, “how could you fail to be musically stimulated.”

Adding to his credentials, Sacha assisted film composer Michael Kamen, (X-Men, Die Hard 1&2 and Lethal Weapon 1,2,3 and 4) orchestrating and composing some of the incidental music for the '1996 Atlanta Olympic Games' and collaborating with him on the score for Pat O’Connor's film 'Inventing The Abbotts.' Later, Sacha wrote the score for Genie award winner, 'The Confessional', as well as Dennis Hopper’s 'The Keeper,' along with additional music for Nick Love’s cult movie 'The Football Factory.'

For BBC Radio Four Sacha's collaboration with Director John Dryden earned them three Sony Awards for adaptations of Bleak House, Q&A and A Suitable Boy, while in 2005 his first classical album 'Remasterpiece' was released by EMI.

Recently, Puttnam has scored the movies 'Rising Tide' and 'No Place to Hide' for Northern Media, the animated feature 'Return to Rainspell Island' for Hit, the feature documentaries 'The War You Don't See' for John Pilger/ ITV, 'We are the People we've been Waiting For' for New Moon, 'Irwin & Fran' for Cinemastone and more radio dramas for the BBC. 'Six Suspects,' 'Tokyo Murders', 'Severed Threads', 'Rio Stories', 'Martin Chuzzlewit'and 'Pandemic'.

Puttnam has scored the recently released 3DS video game 'Heroes of Ruin' for Square Enix and is releasing a set of movie transcriptions for Piano and Orchestra to coincide with the 2012 London Olympics.
